A Plea for Brevity

This past week I was reading some of my dad's old blog posts, and I was amazed at how much information and actionable advice he could squeeze into a few words. It reminded me of how much I enjoy and respect brevity.
How many times have you attended an hour-long meeting that could have been a one paragraph email? Is it not one of the most frustrating experiences?
Nobody likes to have their time wasted. However, most people like to take their time when they are in the spotlight. Fight the urge to speak for longer than you need to, write more than the situation requires, or force an unnecessary discussion.
One minute of five-star material is infinitely better than five minutes of a three-star effort. This week, challenge yourself to cram as much quality into time-constrained situations as you can. The process of cutting waste helps you to determine your key points, avoid losing your audience's attention, and shine in the spotlight.
Embrace the beauty of brevity and win the respect of your colleagues.
